A higher rate exist when diabetes is combined with depression. These are the findings of a two year study done by the University of Washington.
The study findings came from 10,704 patients who had diabetes and depression and were on Medicare in Florida.
Those patients were 36 to 38 percent more likely to die from any cause, not just from diabetes-related complications.
Lead author Dr. Wayne Katon, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at (UW), noted that previous research indicates that depression and diabetes is a potentially lethal mix among young to middle-aged patients.
Depression worsens chronic diseases such as diabetes, because individuals who suffer from it are prone not to care for themselves properly. e.g. Smoking, poor diet, over-eating.
Depression is also associated with nervous system and endocrine system problems, and with inflammatory markers.
